Question by anonymousguy999: is living underground safe from earthquakes?
in comparison to living in a high rise or just a house, is living underground more or less dangerous?
the outlook doesnt look good, i dont want to live in an apartment and i dont want to live out at sea. a ground level house sounds safe…. what about a house that is underground but has a thin roof that wont crush me?

Hi you children come out with some rather strange ideas, it makes no difference if you are above ground or under ground earthquakes happen in certain parts of the world the best thing is to move to a place where they don’t happen.

I’d guess you’d be closer to the epicenter so no. You’d face a cave in.
Residing in a cave during an earthquake makes about as much sense as residing in a big hole next to the sea during a hurricane.
The main things to avoid in an earthquake are falling structural debris (manmade and natural) , the resultant fires , avalanches, flooding from broken dams and coastal tsunamis. Of the three you mentioned, a wood frame house away from buildings is best, but not a stone masonry house. The best place to be overall during an earthquake and its aftermaths is on a ship well out at sea.
I agree a single story wood house is likely safest. Far below the ground may be almost as safe if your structure is built with lots of prestressed concrete = very expensive. Keep some scuba gear ready as your passage to the surface may flood. Neil
