All too soon it was time to head back south through Coober Pedy and back to Port Augusta, a long and weary trip lightened only when we saw……….not kangaroos but camels! Originally brought into Australia from Afghanistan by early settlers and prospectors, they now roam freely around the desert, another hazard to keep an eye open for. We stopped overnight in Coober Pedy this time in order to visit one of the mines and an underground house, really weird. The “house” we visited actually had a seam of Opals in it, so I guess that ups the real estate value a bit. An early start next day saw us at Port Augusta by early afternoon with a good few kilometres still to go. Paul kept us on track each day to make sure that we arrived in Sydney on time to hand back Millicent. Heading out from Port Augusta, we found a great campsite in the Clare Valley, at a small town called Gladstone. It really deserved more than an overnight stop but the vineyards were calling. The Clare Valley is just gorgeous and we could see ourselves living there, rolling hillsides, small country villages and vineyards!
